# Image Quality

## Instructions on image quality requirements for cover and interior content supplied by authors.

Last edited by Mireia on 16th June 2026

### Why does image quality matter?

The quality of images supplied by authors directly affects the quality of the printed book. Low-resolution images appear blurry or pixelated in print, even if they look fine on screen. It is the PE's responsibility to set clear expectations with authors before they submit any images, and to request higher-resolution versions if what is supplied does not meet the minimum standard.

### What are the image quality requirements?

- All images must be scanned and supplied digitally.
- Images should be scanned at **300 dpi or higher** — this applies to both cover and interior images.
- Acceptable file formats: **JPEG, JPG, or PNG** only.
- **Do not accept PDFs** as image files.
- **Mobile phone photos and screenshots cannot be accepted** — these are typically too low resolution for print.

### How should I advise authors to scan their images?

Share the following guidance with authors when requesting images:

- Use a **home scanner set to 300 dpi or higher**.
- Alternatively, take photos to a local photo processing service (e.g. Staples, Costco, Snappy Snaps) and request **high-resolution scans to be emailed to you**.
- Supply files as JPEG, JPG, or PNG — not PDF.
- Do not send low-res mobile phone photos or screenshots.

### What should I do if I receive poor quality images?

If an author submits images that do not meet the 300 dpi requirement, **request that they resubmit higher-resolution versions before passing anything on to the designer or typesetter**. Do not pass poor quality images forward — this causes delays and affects the final product.

### Does this apply to images sourced by StoryTerrace?

No. This guidance applies only to **images supplied by the author**. If StoryTerrace is sourcing the image, illustration, or graphic (e.g. via Shutterstock or commissioned artwork), we ensure it meets the necessary quality standards.

### Any tips for advising authors on cover images specifically?

- Advise authors that **300 dpi images print significantly better** than lower-resolution alternatives.
- If an author supplies a low-quality image for the cover, suggest using a Bookmaker template with a **smaller image placeholder** to minimise the visibility of any quality issues.
- Consider the **cropping and composition** of the image — ensure the title is readable and does not obstruct the main subject.
- If the image is too low quality for any template, escalate to management or the designer for advice before proceeding.
